So, in case you missed it the other day, Empire Magazine has a pretty sweet marketing campaign going for X-Men: Days of Future Past. For their upcoming issue they have 25 different covers, each with a different character. Many of these covers give us our first and/or best look at these new characters and new costumes. I’m going to go through each cover individually and give my thoughts on the look and what each could mean for the movie and the rest of the franchise.
First up, the Sentinel. Finally we have Sentinels in the X-Men movies. They have been an integral part of the X-Men comics and animated series for so long. We have already seen plenty of pictures of what these were going to look like so there isn’t really anything shocking on this cover. I personally think the Sentinels look pretty cool but kind of wish they would have stuck with the design we saw in the Danger Room scene in The Last Stand.
Next up is Havok, the presumably older brother of Cyclops (despite being Cyclops’ younger brother in the comics). There is an obvious military thing going on in DOFP and it would seem that Alex Summers has enlisted or has possibly been drafted. My only gripe here is the swirling energy. I really hope we don’t see Havok hula-hooping his energy blasts again.
This cover marks our first look at Toad‘s look for DOFP. His inclusion will likely lead to him joining Magneto and Mystique to form the Brotherhood we saw in 2000’s X-Men. Honestly, I’m intrigued by this out of the ordinary look for him. Looks like he will be fighting along side Havok at least for a portion of this movie.
Next we have that blue furry guy, Beast played by Nicholas Hoult. It would seem that Beast’s look has evolved over the past few years since First Class. Personally I prefer this to his First Class look. Hopefully we get some X-Men costumes though and not just street clothes through the whole movie.
Ugh. Quicksilver‘s look is really, really horrible. I can’t believe anyone in production thought this looked good. I really don’t have one positive thing to say about this character right now. Moving on…
I love Michael Fassbender as the young Magneto. I’m sure he will be great again. I’m still not crazy about this chest piece he’s rockin’ as Magneto. It doesn’t look like it quite fits him correctly. Maybe it’s just me.
Now we are into the future covers. This is the future version of Wolverine, whose mind is sent back in time. Early shots had me hoping that we might finally see Logan in something that wasn’t all black, maybe something yellowish. But it looks like the yellow and blue on his shoulder was just a tease. Oh well, it’s better than the leather jumpsuits.
Storm looks pretty cool. Her hairstyle is totally different from previous entries and, for this character, it works. She has had all kinds of crazy hairstyles in the comics including a mohawk at one point. And the all black ensemble fits her as well.
Interesting that Rogue is getting a cover here. Bryan Singer had recently explained that her one scene had been left on the cutting room floor. Maybe he rethought that decision and has added her back in. Or maybe these covers were completed before the editing process stripped her from the script. Either way, it would be interesting to find out if Rogue’s powers had come back after taking the cure in The Last Stand. Magneto took 3 or 4 shots of the cure and still got his powers back.
Warpath is a pretty freakin’ cool character in the comics. His older brother was an X-Man named Thunderbird. Thunderbird was killed in the line of duty. Warpath joined X-Force and the rest is history. It’s cool to see the paint around Warpath’s eyes, hinting at the mask that he has always worn in the comics. It’s also cool to see him wielding his giant hunting knives. He didn’t ALWAYS use them in the comics but at least they are paying attention. Big problem though… this kid is way too small to be Warpath. Warpath is supposed to be huge. I know Booboo Stewart has gotten himself pretty ripped for this role but he still isn’t Warpath sized. This is also where some of these all black – not quite leather – suits. That weird design on his chest doesn’t seem to be fitting of any character much less Warpath.
Kitty Pryde wearing… you guessed it… all black. Bryan Singer says that the uniforms aren’t leather in DOFP. Really, Singer? What do you call this? This may not technically be a uniform but she is most certainly wearing a black leather jacket and black leather pants.
Iceman grew a beard! Well, what else can I say. He’s wearing all black. His ice powers are looking less like ice and more like blue energy. Hopefully he transforms into his all ice Iceman again. That was cool.
Bishop is one of my favorite X-Men of all time. I could very easily get super picky and nit pick this thing apart. But, honestly, I love Bishops look. We know at this point that Fox aren’t going to give us comic accurate looks at the characters’ uniforms. So, this actually works for a Bishop in this X-Men movie universe. My only complaint is that gun. It looks like something Nerf or Super Soaker would put out.
Colossus looks as cool as ever. Daniel Cudmore seems to fit this part quite well. All black again. I also would have preferred if Colossus had the plated look to his metal skin rather than this almost liquid metal / T-1000 sort of look.
Last but not least is our first look at the future version of a Sentinel. I would assume this look to be something akin to Nimrod from the comics but it really doesn’t look a whole lot like Nimrod. The look has been explained as follows by production designer John Mayhre:
“They’re biomechanical weapons. We had to come up with what would be the ultimate version that could actually, in principle, stop the X-Men. We started with this idea that they were almost made up of magnetic plates slapped over one another, imagining that the plates could contract or grow, so the Sentinel can be skinny to get through a small space or the plates can open up to become a bigger shape. So they have become virtually unstoppable.”
Well, that’s all 25. And in case you didn’t pick up on it, they are all connected. Check them all out in connected form below. Click to embiggen.
What do you think? Does this have you more excited for X-Men: Days of Future Past than ever?
