I’m not sure if I never saw Tomorrow Never Dies or if I had just completely forgotten it but this go around with it felt like a first ever viewing of a really fun Bond movie.
James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) heads to stop media mogul Elliot Carver’s (Jonathan Pryce) plan to induce war between China and the UK in order to obtain exclusive global media coverage.
Tomorrow Never Dies must have one of the most ridiculous Bond storylines of any Bond movie. They are all ridiculous in their own way but a newspaper mogul essentially making news so he can be the first to report the news.
What an opening!!! I mean, it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that a Bond movie is exciting but this is how you start a movie! There are a few iffy special effects but they are far outweighed by the sheer excitement of the near 10 minute action fest that is the pre-opening credits intro.
I love that James Bond just jet sets around the world philandering with beautiful women and revealing what one must assume would be a secret identity. The guy’s a top secret agent with Her Majesty’s Secret Service and yet he tells every single pretty lady he meets his full name, even repeating it in case they didn’t get it the first time.
I won’t claim to have seen every Bond movie or every Bond girl but Michelle Yeoh has to be the ass kickingest Bond girl of all time.
The action set pieces are awesome. Each scene is a nice extended extravaganza of chases, gun fights, explosions and more.
In some ways it feels weird to watch an action movie that is actually fun. It s really something that has been missing from all too many action movies now a days. Bond movies have always known how to have fun though and Tomorrow Never Dies is probably one of my favorites – ridiculous plot and all.
